We spoke to students, postgrads, faculty, founders, retailers and diaspora sponsors across five Ghanaian cities. Six are critical and almost completely unsolved.

Study-abroad agents that take fees and disappear

Who feels it: Prospective students applying to UK, US, Canada, Germany, China

Ghana Immigration Service and the Ministry of Education have repeatedly warned about unlicensed 'education agents' charging GHS 5,000–50,000 with no admission or visa to show for it. Stories surface weekly on Reddit r/ghana, X (Ghana Twitter), and Joy News.

Postgrad students stuck on methodology with no one to ask

Who feels it: MPhil, MSc, MBA, PhD candidates at UG, KNUST, UCC, UPSA, GIMPA, UEW

Supervisors carry 20–60 students and respond in weeks. Students resort to WhatsApp groups, paying informal 'data analysts' GHS 800–3,000 for SPSS runs they can't interpret or defend.

Who feels it: Faculty under publish-or-perish pressure; PhD students

Hundreds of Ghanaian-authored papers sit in known predatory outlets (Beall's list, Cabells). Promotions get blocked when committees flag the journals. Faculty have paid USD 200–800 in APCs to journals that vanish.

Who feels it: Every applicant trying to use a Ghanaian card abroad

BoG forex restrictions and bank USD card caps mean GRE, IELTS, UCAS, Common App and APC payments routinely fail. Students pay 15–30% to 'middlemen' on WhatsApp to handle it.
